The Post-Operative Pneumonia Prevention Study

POPPs is set to be the second NoSTRA project. Post-operative pneumonia is a common and significant problem following emergency laparotomy. A recent study carried out in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead, demonstrated that up to a third of emergency laparotomy patients will be diagnosed with pneumonia post-operatively; this leads to a four fold increased mortality risk and carries a significant clinical and financial burden. There are few studies in the literature looking at preventative measures in this area.
